West Indies beats India by seven wickets in thriller at Lord's

LONDON — West Indies beat India by seven wickets in a thrilling run chase at the Twenty20 World Cup at Lord's on Friday.

After India posted 153-7, Dwayne Bravo struck 66 not out off 36 balls and Lendl Simmons added 44 for West Indies to reach its target with 156-3 and eight balls to spare in the Super 8s.

Bravo finished the match in style with a six by smacking a full toss from Zaheer Khan over extra cover.

In all, he cracked three sixes and four boundaries, adding an unbeaten 56 in 4.1 overs with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who hit an unbeaten 9-ball 18.

Bravo also claimed 4-38 and Fidel Edwards 3-24 when India batted.

Captain Chris Gayle made just 22, but he was happy his teammates rose to the occasion.

"It's not all the time that you're going to get off to a flyer," he said. "It didn't happen today, but I'm really happy some of our younger players stepped up and it's really good for the team.

"Fidel Edwards picked up wickets at the top of the order. The majority of India's players are very good batsmen, but taking key wickets is very important."

Though India needs to win its last two Super8s games to advance to the semifinals, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the pressure didn't bother him.

"It will bring out the best in us," he said. "We were under a lot of pressure in the last World Cup when it was do or die every game, but we got through to the final and won it."

West Indies initially vindicated Gayle's decision to field after winning the toss by ripping through the top order.

Rohit Sharma was first to go for 5, caught by Simmons off Edwards in the second over. Raina was blatantly out, but he stood his ground and walked only after the television umpire intervened.

Suresh Raina was next for 5, nicking a catch behind to Denesh Ramdin off Edwards.

Simmons then caught opener Gautan Gambhir after he miscued a Bravo delivery and India ended the powerplay with just 40 from six overs.

Dhoni made 11 before he was caught on the boundary by Andre Fletcher off Bravo. India lurched at 66-4 but Yuvraj Singh (67) and Yusuf Pathan (31) launched a fierce counterattack.

Fletcher spilled a hard chance from Pathan, and the latter took advantage in the 15th over, with Pathan and Singh smacking Bravo for 16.

The duo put on 50 from 26 balls.

Singh was caught and bowled by Edwards in the 18th over, but Jerome Taylor missed a return catch from Pathan, who eventually went in the final over, bowled by Bravo. Harbhajan Singh, 13 not out, hit fours from the last three balls to give India a defendable target.

Dhoni ultimately rued the loss of early wickets.

"A lot depends on the first few overs," he said. "If you lose too many wickets then obviously you need to go for a more considered approach. Then your lower order batsmen can go for it, but it never happened for us."

Pathan's brother Irfan struck an early blow during the chase when he had Fletcher caught by Yuvraj for a duck in the second over, and Harbhajan then bowled only the second maiden of the tournament in the sixth over.

When Gayle was caught by Khan off Irfan for 22, the Indian supporters who formed the overwhelming majority of the crowd, celebrated as if the game was already won.

But Simmons and Bravo put on 50 from 35 balls, and with wickets in hand the outcome hung in the balance.

In the 15th over both batsmen found themselves at the same end, only for Dhoni to fumble the ball and miss the chance of a run out, but two balls later Simmons was caught at deep square leg, after getting a top edge to Irfan. Simmons and Bravo shared 58 in 6.5 overs.

The momentum shifted decisively in West Indies' favour when Bravo and Chanderpaul scored 16 runs from the 17th over and 15 off the 18th, including a brilliant reverse sweep for four by Chanderpaul.

Pakistan secured a place in the Super Eight phase of the World Twenty20 after thrashing the Netherlands by 82 runs.

Kamran Akmal (41) fired two sixes and Younus Khan (36) hit three as Pakistan made 175-5 after opting to bat first.

The target of 176 was effectively 151 for the Netherlands to go through and eliminate Pakistan on run-rate.

But spinners Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi both took two wickets in three balls and Akmal four superb stumpings, as the minnows were routed for 93.

In such an important contest following their 48-run defeat against England, all the batsmen contributed in the Pakistan innings.

Even when the runs began to dry up in the middle, Misbah ul-Haq came in at the start of the 14th over and soon hit the first boundary for 30 balls.

The 18th over proved the most prolific, Younus wielding two sixes, one smartly caught by a sprightly member in the pavilion.

After Younus holed out to long-on, Misbah hit the final ball of the over down the ground for four more.

Dirk Nannes, the fastest bowler in the tournament having reached 150km/h, also proved one of the best, conceding only one four in his first three overs of accurate left-arm over seam.

He was hit for one mammoth six over long-on by Afridi in the final over but returned next ball to uproot the leg-stump.

The total was more than adequate and Afridi then shone with the ball, striking with his first delivery and varying his pace magnificently.

If his all-round contributions continue in this vain, and Akmal remains clinically sharp with the gloves and purposeful at the top of the order with the bat, the 2007 finalists will surely be a force to be reckoned with again.

Dutch skipper Jeroen Smits admitted his side had crumbled under the pressure and said: "We didn't play that well. Afridi was outstanding and on these wickets we've struggled."

Stoutly built opener Dan Reekers gave them a solid start, clipping three authoritative fours in the first eight balls before he was caught at deep mid-wicket and the innings quickly subsided.

"We had to score 151 and I think that was too much for us," Smits said. "Our bowling was OK but we should have restricted them to 150."

Pakistan captain Younus was understandably rather more satisfied and said: "Everything went to plan.

"Beforehand I said 170 or 180 would be enough.

"It's always good fun when you have a tight game and come from behind and win. The spinners are doing very well at the moment."

Akmal deservedly collected the man-of-the-match award after becoming the first keeper to take four stumpings in a Twenty20 international.

"I work very hard on my wicket-keeping and I'm very happy," he said. Of his batting he added: "Twenty20 is a fun game so I just play positive. I had a very good start and we did well through the innings."

Injured Sehwag out of Twenty20 World Cup

India batsman Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup with a shoulder injury and will return home, the Indian cricket board said on Tuesday.

Indian selectors named wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik as replacement, although the call-up needs to be ratified by the International Cricket Council.

Sehwag, 30, was injured in the lead up to the tournament and missed Saturday's opening win over Bangladesh.

The holders face Ireland on Wednesday with both teams having already qualified for the Super Eights.

The explosive opening batsman, who played in the victorious Twenty20 team in 2007, will consult doctors in England before flying home, the board statement added.

Sehwag could also miss the four-game one-day series in West Indies from June 26 to July 5 if the injury persists.

LONDON — South Africa beat New Zealand by a single run to win Group D at the Twenty20 World Cup at Lord's on Tuesday.

Both sides had already qualified for the Super 8s but didn't let up as South Africa successfully defended the lowest total in a Twenty20 international.

The Africans made a modest 128-7 from their 20 overs, but a miserly spell from Roelof van der Merwe, who took 2-14 from his four overs, restricted the Kiwis to 127-5.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith believed the experience would serve his side well in the Super 8s.

"I think we were probably 20 runs short," he admitted. "We lost our way a bit when we lost Jacques (Kallis), but we did quite well to keep them under 130, because we knew it wasn't an easy wicket. It was a great effort and it was really useful to have a pressurized game and have a low total to defend."

Smith scored 33 and put on an opening stand of 49 with Kallis, who hit 24, but South Africa lost its next nine wickets for 77 thanks to an excellent fielding display from New Zealand.

Ian Butler was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers with 2-13.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum - standing in for the injured Daniel Vettori - made 57, but his side's run chase was hindered by the early losses of Martin Guptil (six), caught by Van der Merwe off Dale Steyn, and Neil Broom (one), who offered a return catch to Kallis.

Ross Taylor suffered a suspected hamstring injury as he narrowly avoided being run out and needed to bat with a runner, but he put on a half-century stand with McCullum before he was bowled for 22 by Van der Merwe.

The run rate crept up and the momentum shifted decisively when Van der Merwe had McCullum stumped for 57 by Mark Boucher.

New Zealand needed 15 from the final over, bowled by Wayne Parnell.

Kallis dropped Jacob Oram with three balls to go, leaving the Kiwis needing eight from the last two balls.

Oram hit the next ball for four, but failed to connect properly with the final delivery and made just two runs before he was run out, handing the Proteas a win by the narrowest possible margin.

"I though the bowling went really well and the fielding," McCullum said. "We had to be happy to get them out for under 130, but every time we put together a partnership we were unable to accelerate."

Earlier, New Zealand's excellent display in the field limited South Africa.

The opening stand ended in the eighth over when Kallis was run out by a direct hit from McCullum.

Gibbs (three) and Smith went with the total on 63, while Van der Merwe was out for a duck two runs later. The prize wicket of AB de Villiers - also run out by a direct hit from Guptil - for 15 ended South Africa's chances of posting a healthy score.

Boucher was caught for six by McCullum off Butler in a vain bid to accelerate the run rate in the 18th over.

JP Duminy went in the penultimate over for 29, chipping a ball from Kyle Mills straight to Broom, one delivery after hitting the same bowler for a six. The South Africans managed just six runs from the final six balls.

Kumar Sangakkara played a captain's innings with 55 not out off 42 balls after Tillakaratne Dilshan (53 off 32 balls) gave his side a flying start in pursuit of 160.

Australia never fully recovered from a disastrous middle period of their innings when the slow bowlers pegged them back after a decent start.

An inspiring catch from David Warner lifted Australian hopes in reply when he took a fine leaping catch just inside the boundary rope to dismiss Sanath Jayasuriya for 2.

Dilshan and Sangakkara then saw their side to 62 off the six-over Powerplay as the runs flowed at a good rate.

Dilshan brought up his own 50 off 26 balls, when he flipped Watson over the head of the wicketkeeper for his 10th boundary, but he fell saw after when bowled by Michael Clarke.

Mahela Jayawardene (9) then took a wild swipe at Nathan Hauritz and got a top-edge to short third-man.

Two sixes off successive balls by Sangakkara off Hauritz then hastened the Sri Lankan victory although there was a slight stutter during Brett Lee's third over when Silva pulled to short mid-wicket and three more dot balls followed. But Jehan Mubarak ended the over with a six just over the head of deep midwicket to leave the batting side with 24 to get off the last 18 balls.

Sangakkara reached his 50 off 40 with a delicate lap shot just wide of short fine-leg to help bring the equation down to 14 from 12 balls.

Mubarak brought the required rate down to less than a run a ball as Lee's tournament ended as it had started and middle - by being hit into the stand for six.

Australia's campaign was summed up when Mubarak (21 off 12 balls) smacked Lee to mid-off but the fielder could only palm the ball to the boundary as he leapt for what would have been a miraculous catch.

Mitchell Johnson's wide to finish the match put the icing on the cake for Australia - not a sweet tasting one at that - as they bowed out of the tournament with an over to spare.

Australia's total was much better than was expected at one time when they slumped to 94-6 towards the end of the 15th over.

David Warner (0) fell in the first over when he slashed Angelo Mathews to backward point but Shane Watson (22) and Ricky Ponting (25) steadied the Aussie ship in a stand of 48.

Spin then took hold as Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan (initially) put a block on the scoring. At that point Mendis had the exceptional analysis of 2-0-4-2.

Ponting was bowled by Mendis as he looked to make room to leg and then Watson was leg before during the off-spinner's next over when he missed a sweep.

Brad Haddin went in embarrassing circumstances when he missed a slow full toss from Malinga and was bowled for 16.

Isuru Udana was another pace bowler to make full use of a slower ball when he deceived Michael Clarke, who could only send a leading edge back to the bowler who took a fine one-handed catch to his left.

Mendis and Muralitharan continued to put the squeeze on the batsmen and it was the former who struck for the third time when he trapped Mike Hussey in front of his stumps with a quicker ball.

From that point, however, the Aussie middle and lower order swung the match back towards parity with some lusty blows.

David Hussey and Johnson added 41 in 21 deliveries to destroy Muralitharan by taking 21 from his last over after the veteran spinner had conceded just eight from his first 18 balls.

Australia plundered 65 from their last five overs with Udana also suffering at the hands of Hussey and Johnson, although he did at least claim the wicket of the former, slicing a skier to backward point, during an over that cost 18.

Lasith Malinga's final over of the innings encapsulated the whole batting effort at 12 were taken from it in between two wickets.

Lee was cleaned out by a yorker (but not before scoring 15 off five balls) and then a slower ball deceived Hauritz off the penultimate ball. An inside edge off the last delivery by Nathan Bracken meant Australia finished with all the momentum running their way.

It was not to last.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the showpiece event of the cricket calendar and takes place every four years, with matches contested in a 50 overs per side format.

There have been nine events so far, with the first tournament taking place in England in 1975.

The last ICC Cricket World Cup took place in 2007 in the Caribbean which was won by Australia, which became the first side in history to win three consecutive titles.

In a final which was interrupted by rain, Australia won the title by 53 runs (Duckworth/Lewis method), with Adam Gilchrist's 149 off 104 balls, the highest score in a CWC Final, helping him take the Man of the Match Award.

Spectacular hitting dominated the tournament, most notably when South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs became the first man in ODI history to hit six sixes in one over against the Netherlands, Matthew Hayden of Australia scored the fastest hundred in CWC history off 66 balls against South Africa and New Zealand's Brendon McCullum's 50 off 20 balls against Canada was also a record.

India made a record team score in a CWC, with 413 against Bermuda, the Australia-South Africa group match was the highest match aggregate in CWC history and the 18 sixes in the South Africa-Netherlands match was also an ODI record.

There were also moments of individual brilliance with the ball, with Lasith Malinga becoming the first to take four wickets in four balls in an ODI and the fifth player to take a CWC hat-trick.

Other winners of the event include West Indies (1975, 1979), India (1983), Pakistan (1992) and Sri Lanka (1996). Australia also captured the title in 1987.

The next ICC Cricket World Cup will be held in 2011 in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Read more
